There are literally thousands of charities that are very worthy of support
and would doubtless put your money to very good use. The charity I have chosen
is Water Aid, their vision is as follows:
"WaterAid's vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe
water and effective sanitation.
WaterAid is an international non governmental organisation dedicated exclusively
to the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education
to the world's poorest people.
These most basic services are essential to life; without them vulnerable
communities are trapped in the stranglehold of disease and poverty. We work
by helping local organisations set up low cost, sustainable projects using
appropriate technology that can be managed by the community itself."
Access to safe water is such a basic requirement for life that
it's difficult (for me!) to imagine that over a billion people do not have
it! This coupled with the lack of sanitation mean that over 2 million people
die from water-related diseases every year. Furthermore, many women and children
in developing countries spend hours each day walking miles to collect water.
This water is usually dirty and unsafe but they have no alternative. Carrying
heavy water containers is an exhausting task, which takes up valuable time
and energy preventing women from doing vital domestic or income generating
work and stopping children from going to school.
So, Water Aid is the charity that I have chosen... if you have some other
charity that is particularly close to your heart then I may be persuaded
to donate the money
to 'your' charity rather than Water Aid.
